Charles "Chuck" Cornett     1933 - 2004

Chuck Cornett, a longtime Jacksonville Track Club member and a founding father of the Florida Striders, passed away on Friday June 25, 2004 at his home in Gulf Breeze, FL from an apparent heart attack at the age of 71.

Chuck is survived by his wife Betty and their four children - Mike, Mark, Kathy, & Sandy.  Betty and the family wish to grieve privately.  Certainly sympathy cards would be appreciated - 90 Baybridge Dr.,   Pensacola, FL 32561 - E-mail: TopRun7197@aol.com  . The family requests that, instead of flowers, a donation be made to the Naval Aviation Museum in Chuck's name. The museum's address is 1750 Radford Blvd. Suite C, NAS Pensacola, FL 32508.

Chuck turned 71 in May. He and Betty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 6th. Ironically he was looking forward to running with the Striders on June 27th. He was sitting at the computer a 7:45 on the morning of June 25th, stood up and apparently had a massive heart attack. He had not been feeling well since his return from Spain 6 weeks prior. He had been to doctors several times since but they could find nothing wrong.

For those of you who did not know, Chuck was a co-founder of the Florida Striders in 1978. He coached many runners - both formally and informally, held running camps, was a past Striders president, race director of the 1981 Autumn Twilight Run, and an all around great guy. Chuck loved his Sunday morning runs from Sun Tire in Orange Park.  Chuck retired from the US Navy as a Captain in 1980 after 30 years of service.

Chuck will be cremated and his ashes interred at Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola. The memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on July 9, 2004.
